MMOexp:Best Early League Builds in POE2 Return of the Ancients
With Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients introducing new skills, weapons, and build opportunities, many players are looking for a reliable league starter that can clear the campaign, farm endgame maps, and scale into high-tier content without expensive gear. Fortunately, three proven builds stand out as early favorites: the Raging Fire Grenadier Mercenary, Triple Djinn Disciple of Verashda, and Whirling Assault Smith of Kitava. Each offers serious damage, POE 2 Exalted Orbs, and excellent value for players starting a fresh league.
1. Raging Fire Grenadier Mercenary
The Raging Fire Grenadier Mercenary is one of the strongest ranged starters available. Despite its name, the build relies heavily on Explosive Shot for map clearing, using powerful projectile attacks to pin enemies and deal massive elemental damage.
One of its biggest strengths is affordability. The build functions well with basic gear and doesn't require expensive uniques or rare support gems to reach endgame. Its combination of crowd control, armor breaking, and enemy pinning also provides impressive survivability.
Boss fights are another major advantage. By combining multiple grenade skills, players can stack significant burst damage while staying safely at range.
Most versions currently use the Tactician ascendancy, which offers automatic pinning, easy armor breaking, and strong defensive utility. However, the updated Gemling ascendancy could become a powerful alternative thanks to Advanced Thaumaturgy, which enhances skill gem quality effects.
Return of the Ancients also introduces the Trarthan Cannon, a weapon designed specifically for grenade-focused gameplay. Combined with the new Rune Forged Blade skill, which consumes broken armor to generate extra projectiles, Mercenary players gain several exciting new ways to increase damage and clear speed.
2. Triple Djinn Disciple of Verashda
Players who enjoy minions but dislike slow gameplay should consider the Triple Djinn Disciple of Verashda. This build combines powerful summoned allies with excellent mobility, creating one of the fastest and safest league starters in the game.
The gameplay loop is simple: summon Djinns, command them into battle, and continue moving through maps while your minions handle most of the damage. Recent updates reducing command-skill movement penalties have made the build feel smoother than ever.
A major advantage is its progression. Early leveling uses strong spells such as Essence Drain, Contagion, Orb of Storms, and Spark before transitioning into the full Djinn setup around levels 21-24. This allows players to remain powerful throughout the entire campaign.
The build also requires very little gear investment. Most upgrades come from increasing minion skill levels through helmets, amulets, and weapons. Expensive unique items are optional rather than mandatory.
A notable addition in Return of the Ancients is Eternal March, a new skill that instantly revives defeated minions. During difficult boss fights, players can quickly rebuild their army with a single button press, greatly improving both convenience and survivability.
3. Whirling Assault Smith of Kitava
For melee enthusiasts, the Whirling Assault Smith of Kitava offers one of the most satisfying league-start experiences available.
The build revolves around constantly spinning through enemies with Whirling Assault while triggering Fire Spell on Hit effects. These effects activate Detonate Dead, causing nearby corpses to explode and chain through entire enemy packs.
Because corpse explosion damage scales largely from monster life rather than player gear, the build performs extremely well even on a modest budget. This allows players to focus their resources on survivability and movement.
The Smith of Kitava ascendancy provides excellent defenses through the Masterwork crafting system, making it easier to cap resistances and stack armor during progression.
Damage scaling comes primarily from generating Power Charges through combinations like Mantra of Destruction and Aleth Chime. Once established, the build maintains strong damage while preserving smooth gameplay.
Despite being a melee build, boss damage is surprisingly strong. Players can deploy their Bell, rapidly stack hits, and create powerful burst windows capable of defeating bosses much faster than many league starters.
Another major advantage is Solo Self-Found viability. The build has been successfully progressed without trading, making it an excellent option for players who prefer self-sufficient gameplay.
